What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community?
    A continuing care retirement community is a housing option for older people that supports independent living and also offers health care services.  There is a range of housing choices including: individual homes, apartments, assisted living apartments, community based residential facilities and nursing homes.  As the needs of the people increase, they can move from one part of the complex to another depending on care needs. In Manitowoc County these facilities are also called "Residential Care Apartment Complexes".

Who Would Benefit From A CCRC?
    Individuals who no longer want to have the responsibility of a home and want to have the sense of security the community provides.  Also, individuals who desire the benefit of moving from one level of care to another within the community.

Who Determines When  A Person Needs To Move From One Level Of Care Within A Community?
    A trained staff member assesses the needs of the resident and consults with the family and the resident.  Together a decision is made in regard to appropriate placement.

What Written Documents Must A CCRC Have?
    Most Continuing Care Retirement Communities have a financial contract.  Review the contract carefully and if need be, have a lawyer review it also.  There may be some type of an admission agreement which may cover the following: policies on transfers and discharges, resident rights and responsibilities and some form of a complaint procedure.
